There’s a prerequisite for AI search visibility that almost nobody in the gallery world is talking about. Bing Webmaster Tools states it plainly, in its own interface, with no ambiguity:
“SEO/GEO processing can be done only on indexed URLs.”
That one line has significant implications for any gallery trying to understand why it isn’t appearing in AI search answers — and for anyone advising them.
What it actually means
AI search engines don’t crawl the web independently when answering a query. They draw from their own indexes — the database of pages they’ve already found, evaluated and stored. Bing’s AI search, which powers Microsoft Copilot and is integrated across Edge, Windows and an increasingly large share of AI-assisted search queries, draws exclusively from Bing’s web index.
If your gallery’s pages aren’t in that index, Copilot cannot cite them. Not won’t — cannot. The content doesn’t exist as far as Bing’s AI is concerned, regardless of how well-written it is, how strong the entity authority signals are, or how prominently the gallery ranks on Google.
This is not a minor technical detail. It is the floor beneath everything else.
The assumption most galleries are making
Most gallery owners and marketing managers assume that appearing well in Google means they’re visible to AI search broadly. This is understandable — Google has dominated search for so long that “search” and “Google” have become effectively synonymous in most people’s thinking.
They are not the same index. Google and Bing maintain entirely separate databases. A page can rank on page one of Google and be completely absent from Bing’s index. In that case, Copilot — which is already processing billions of queries and growing — has nothing to work with.
The gallery is invisible to an entire AI search engine before the question of entity authority, content quality or citation signals has even been asked.
How to check in two minutes
Go to Bing Webmaster Tools and sign in with a Microsoft account. If you haven’t already claimed your site, do that first — it takes a few minutes and requires adding a small verification code to your site or DNS.
Once you’re in, use the URL Inspection tool to check specific pages. Enter the URL of a key gallery page — your homepage, your main artist pages, your most important category pages — and Bing will tell you whether it’s indexed, when it was last crawled, and whether there are any issues preventing indexing.
If pages are returning as not indexed, submit them directly via the URL submission tool or activate IndexNow, which notifies Bing automatically whenever your site content is updated.
What this means for the Artist Authority audit
In every Artist Authority Report, Bing indexing status is now a standard diagnostic check. Not because it’s the most sophisticated part of the work — it isn’t — but because it’s the most foundational. There’s no point analysing AI citation patterns for pages that aren’t eligible to be cited.
For many galleries, fixing Bing indexing is the fastest, most visible early win in the programme. It’s a technical task that can be completed in an afternoon, and it immediately moves a gallery from “ineligible for Copilot AI citations” to “eligible.” That’s a meaningful change before any content work has started.
Indexing is the floor. Artist Authority is the ceiling.
Getting your pages indexed on Bing makes you eligible to appear in AI answers. It does not make you the answer.
That distinction matters. Eligibility means Copilot can theoretically cite your gallery when answering a relevant query. Whether it actually does — whether your gallery appears as the recommended source on a specific artist, or for a specific category of works, or in response to a trust-related question — depends entirely on the entity authority signals your content and your wider digital footprint carry.
Indexing is the prerequisite. Artist Authority is what determines the outcome once the prerequisite is met.
